Retired from Schlumberger in 2016 after more than 40 years, Alan is still looking for new problems to solve and people to help.  


He has worked in Formation Evaluation, Training, Mentoring, Software Development and Technical Advisor roles in many locations worldwide.

Summary of Qualifications 

  • Over 40 yrs experience in the formation evaluation of major oilfields world-wide.
  • Developer of software for computer processed log interpretation.
  • Expert in wireline well-log acquisition and log analysis.
  • Broad experience of petrophysics including data acquisition (mudlogs, core, well-logs, well-test etc.), processing and analysis, data integration, and interpretation.
  • Teacher, trainer and mentor of Petrophysicists.

Special Skills

Have extensive experience in both developing and delivering Petrophysical Training courses since 1980. A short summary is below:

  • 1980 to 2003 - Internal (Schlumberger) log analysis training. Developed materials for computer-processed log interpretation, saturation determination, field studies and data integration. On average two to three weeks teaching per year
  • 2003 to 2010 - Internal and external (Yukos, Sibneft, Rosneft, Petronas, Repsol,...) training on Russian log interpretation and field evaluation methods. Developed course for petrophysics evaluation with Techlog, taught both internally and externally (mostly North American clients).
  • 2011 - Director of Curriculum for Petrophysics in Schlumberger. Designed fixed step training courses in petrophysics for data processing and acquisition staff (Wireline and LWD).
  • 2012 to 2016 - Delivered at least two weeks internal (general petrophysics, and petrophysics for reservoir description) courses per year and one week external course per year.


Specialist in Mathematics and Software Development. Have undertaken extensive software development including modules in GEOFRAME, TECHLOG and Interactive Petrophysics (IP),


  • Expert in Russian Log interpretation.
