FOUNDATIONS Of PETROPHSYICS

Initial Petrophysical Training for Geologists, Geophysicists, Reservoir & Production Engineers and others involved or interested in characterising formation properties.

This intensive two-day course concentrates on what to do with wireline log and core measurements to derive the key reservoir properties of porosity, permeability, water saturation and net reservoir.

Emphasis will be placed on methodologies which can be satisfactorily audited by external technical experts and joint venture partners.

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for people with little or no practical experience with core and log interpretation. It will assume some background in Geology and basic numerical skills in a spreadsheet. New Petrophysicists, Geologists, Geophysicists, Reservoir & Production Engineers and others becoming involved in formation evaluation and/or reservoir modelling will find this course of benefit.

What Skills Will Participants Gain?

Participants will gain a good understanding of the methodologies used to calculate reservoir properties such as porosity, water saturation, permeability, net reservoir and net pay. Ways of checking estimates and their uncertainties will be discussed.

This course will also provide a step-by-step guide to deciding which log measurements to acquire and how to interpret those measurements in a robust and auditable manner.

Duration

The course is most often supplied as an intensive two day program, but can be tailored to contain more practical work in a three to five day program where requested. Numbers are usually limited to less than 20 people making it possible for the Course Trainer to ensure all participants are following the curriculum.

Course Materials

A detailed training manual is provided to facilitate learning and use of the material. The course will alternate between lecturing with Powerpoint Slides and exercises with real data. The exercises are intended to reinforce the ideas and methodologies discussed. MS-Excel will be used for the exercises rather than dedicated Petrophysics software so that the participants understand which algorithms they should use and why.

Course Content

The following topics will be addressed (more details can be found in the table of contents of the Training Manual):
